The living room’s graceful proportions and impressive architectural details are balanced by its elegantly understated decoration. Comfortable sofas are covered in winter-white linen and accented by French needlepoint pillows. Dark mahogany tables and occasional seating provide a rich contrast complemented by the exotic designs and pastel tones of the large Zieglar-Mahal rug. A landscape by Spanish artist Mayte Camara hangs above the cast stone fireplace enhanced by a surround of blue lapidose granite. A hand-blown, art glass vase rests on the mantel. The drapery fabric bordering the French doors leading to the pool patio is enriched by a delicate paisley pattern.
Although reminiscent of Tuscan villas perched high in the hills of Italy, K.C. Barkley’s beachside home commands a more intimate, lushly tropical setting shaded by tall oaks.
Handsomely designed, this two-story, Italianate house features a wealth of classical details that impart a dignified presence. The low-pitched roof, characteristic of a hybrid genre of Italian architecture, is clad with terra-cotta barrel tiles and features large brackets that support its projecting eaves and dominate the cornice line. French doors open onto several balustraded balconies on the second level, further enhancing the home’s visual appeal. Window and door openings are ornamented with restrained, decorative moldings. Doric-style columns buttress a majestic portico at the main entry where leaded-glass doors lead to the spectacular interior within.
Although Ms. Barkley, better known to all as KC, is most often seen directing the talents of her staff at the Barkley International Design Group in Vero Beach, the home she recently designed is her refuge from the rigors of her work schedule. The interiors were specifically intended to soothe and comfort, and so they do. As the front doors close, a calmness pervades one’s senses. Together with sophisticated elegance, this is a hallmark of KC’s style.
