
Excellence In Energy And Ecology Efficient Design: Thomas Cooper designed his personal residence with elevated views of the Intracoastal Waterway and Savannas Preserve State Park, taking care to make it hurricane-hardened and energy-efficient. The judges particularly liked the wrap-around porches and use of sustainable elements that worked so well with the environment.
Energy efficient. Ecologically responsible. Sustainable. These are terms that describe some of the features architects are taking into consideration while working on a project. And now, thanks to members of the American Institute of Architects Treasure Coast chapter (AIATC), we have a number of local award-winning designs where these features shine. The spotlight was on them in June as members gathered at the Moorings clubhouse to applaud winners of the chapter’s 2008 Excellence in Design Awards.
The call for entries in the 12-category competition went out last October with a deadline set for mid-December. From that point on it was up to a committee of three architects from outside the Treasure Coast area to determine the winners. There were 29 entries, all of them blind – no name, just a number that identified the category, the project, and the architect’s intent as described through detailed documentation and images.
“It’s time-consuming to put together a package for the competition,” says Peter Moor, one of the architects who received an award for Excellence in Residential Design. “But it’s also enjoyable to take time out from your daily routine to reflect on your work.
