Everyone knows the old joke, “How do you get to Carnegie Hall?” For tennis players you could rephrase that question, “How do you get to the U.S. Open?” According to Donna Roup, director of tennis at the Moorings, the answer would be the same: “Practice, practice, practice.”

But before you charge the net in your sparkling tennis whites, you need to learn the right techniques. For those new to the game, finding an instructor should be your first step, says Donna, who garnered a national collegiate doubles championship in 1974 while playing at Trinity College in San Antonio, Texas.

“I do think for a small town – although Vero Beach is not that small anymore – the quality of our tennis professionals is phenomenal,” she says as she watches a couple of teens working on their backhands just a drop shot away from the entrance to her office.
