From Log Cabins To ’24’ And ‘Lost’

Someday, John Terry may decide what he wants to be when he grows up; in the meantime, it’s an actor’s life for him, and a good life it is. Living in Park City, Utah, he commutes from nearby Salt Lake City to wherever his work takes him, and it has taken him all over the world.

When I asked him how he became an actor, I expected to hear the usual story of burning desire since an early age, but he laughed and said he “just fell into it.” It seems while he was living in Black Mountain, N.C., a local playwright named Billy Ed Wheeler heard him singing one day on the roof of a log house he was building and asked him if he would like to be in a musical Wheeler had written that was being produced at a local community theater.

John’s theatrical experience up to this point consisted solely of the female lead in a melodrama put on by his sixth-grade class that had been adapted from Gator Growls, a sort of Hatfield & McCoy take-off.
