Artist, craftsman and teacher Jacquie Fort died on January 9 of this year, a victim of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), better known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Jacquie’s fine-art creations, her inspired teaching and her legacy as the prima causa of the Art Chix remain a permanent part of Vero Beach history as reported in the pages of this magazine in January 2006 (The Art of Expression) and April 2007 (Flower Power is Back).

The Art Chix got its start when several of Jacquie’s students decided to continue as a group after her particularly inspiring “Altered Books” class in 2002. This past January 15, 13 of the Chix met at the home of member Deena Wynne to remember Jacquie and speak in turn of her influence on their lives. Sometimes the Chix’ stories were told with wet cheeks, as when ceramist and painter Janel Lund recalled meeting Jacquie for the first time.
