Music Of The Courtyard

Fountains have been alluded to in literature for thousands of years, both metaphorically and realistically. As a symbol of spiritual purity and nourishment, they have the power to resonate. From ancient times onward, they have been featured in gardens and continue to soothe the eye and ear with their unique attributes.    

 The geometric fountain pictured here has attained the status of an architectural feature in the front courtyard of a Windsor house. Designer Scott Layne had a specific mission in mind. “I wanted to create a reflecting pool of moving water in a cubed shape,” he says. “This would fill the space of the courtyard, compelling the pedestrian to detour around it and observe the courtyard more closely. I wanted to draw out the eye and ear.” 

 Upon arrival, a visitor leaves his car or golf cart in the motor court and ascends the four steps into the courtyard of the house. Confronted by the dynamism and coolness of the moving cube of water and forced to circumvent the fountain to get to the door, the visitor experiences a marked transition – what Layne calls “a subconscious change of thinking” brought on by the atmosphere so skillfully created.
