The “Magical Mermaid” room’s decorator/decorative painter was Martha Ann Sloan, her decorative assistant was Emily Furr. The undersea creatures include a seahorse by the vanity, an octopus between the beds and a huge crab on the wall opposite the window and the bathroom where a seahorse adorns the wall. One can’t miss the mermaid floating merrily along the wall opposite the entry.
Teenage years are difficult to live through even under the best of circumstances. Imagine them under the worst of circumstances. Think how it would feel to be in this precarious stage of life without a secure and safe home.
Imagine being a teenage girl who, due to an abusive situation, neglect, parents in jail or worse, cannot live with her family – and I use “family” in the broadest sense in this world of single-parent households.
How would it feel to be shifted from one foster home to another? How would you cope? Where’s your safety zone? Who could you depend on for advice and attention? Where would you keep your belongings and possessions?
Fortunately for local girls, the Children’s Home Society has been operating the Girls’ Group Home since 1997, located on U.S. 1 in Winter Beach. Modeled after the Boy’s Town Model of Care, it provides a home environment with life-skills training to help prepare for adulthood, counseling and mentoring.
