Postcards From A Colorful Past

Vero Beach attorney Bruce J. Smith provided more than 60 percent of the cards featured in the new “Postcard History” of Indian River County.

Disdained for many years as a low form of pop culture, picture postcards are now considered a valuable resource when delving into the history of a particular city or county. Recognizing this fact, Arcadia Publishing began its Postcard History book series in 1997; its latest, now in bookstores, spotlights Indian River County.

The book was compiled by the Indian River Genealogical Society, which has more than 200 members. The work of the society was made a lot easier by the postcard collection of local attorney Bruce J. Smith, who provided more than 60 percent of the cards used in the book.

Smith has been collecting postcards of Indian River County ever since he moved here in 1982. “My collection began by accident,” he says. “I bought a few postcards which indicated that the area had a far more colorful past than I’d realized. So I began to buy more and more, and now I have a collection of about 900 local cards.”
