A vibrant floral fabric covers the folding screens framing the floor-to-ceiling glass doors that open onto the terrace. The fabric coordinates the living room’s blue and white color scheme, which is grounded by a custom-designed wool rug. Walls painted the pale citrus color of lemon ice offer an ideal, complementary background. The room is enlivened by Nancy Johnson’s collection of blue and white porcelain and several seaside paintings she and her husband Roy have collected over many years.
Cool and serene is the immediate impression. Overlooking a tranquil pond standing in the amber shade of tall oaks and palms, perennial Vero Beach residents Nancy and Roy Johnson’s spacious, light-filled quarters at the River Club at Carlton are elegant, welcoming and beautiful. Though recently acquired in an effort to downsize from their John’s Island lodgings, this one already has that laidback feeling of having been lived in for years. The warm, waxy glow of antique English pine and country French furniture, floor-to-ceiling bookcases filled with favorite books and found treasures, and a sensational collection of blue and white porcelain that spills over into every room all combine to generate an unforgettable ambience.
But none of this is surprising, because Nancy Johnson is well versed in decorating houses, though she readily admits talented decorators have often helped her pull it all together. This latest go-around was entrusted to the capable ministrations of interior designer Paula Holden, whose professional savvy are evident throughout.
