“Overcoming fear is the biggest step in learning to swim,” says swimming coach Scott Barlow.

The average person looks at swimming as a recreational activity: A way to relax and unwind or as a way to cool down during the scorching summer months. But not Scott Barlow: He looks at swimming through a different pair of goggles.

“I think competitive swimming is one of sport’s best-kept secrets,” he says. “There are so many benefits to it and it teaches kids so many lessons about life.”

Scott and his wife moved to Indian River County last year to share those life lessons by creating the Treasure Coast Conquistadors, a year-round swimming team that trains at the North County Aquatic Center in Sebastian. This summer, he was also named the new head coach for the Sebastian River Sharks.
