The Heart of the Matter

Matheen A. Khuddus, M.D., F.A.C.C. , is a 34-year-old physician and Fellow in the American College of Cardiology who makes his home in Gainesville with his wife Saleha and their 6-year-old daughter Ayesha. He practices with nine other interventional cardiologists in their offices near the campus of North Florida Regional Medical Center and is board-certified in interventional cardiology, nuclear cardiology, cardiovascular disease and internal medicine.

Matheen’s journey from the study halls and athletic fields of Saint Edward’s was probably not a big surprise to his classmates and teachers. He is the son of a cardiologist, the now retired Dr. Shaik Khuddus, a native of India who practiced medicine in Fort Pierce for over 20 years.

While in high school Matheen said he considered going into medicine, but “kept the door open for other options.” By the time he graduated in 1993, his mind was made up. He matriculated to the University of Miami where he had earned a scholarship and where his older brother was also enrolled. “Besides these reasons,” he adds, “the University of Miami had a program where I could be accepted into medical school after three years of college, and earn an undergraduate and medical degree in only seven years.” Thus, he started at the University of Miami as a biology major.
