The Painting Teacher You Always Wanted

In her home studio, Kathy Staiger poses in front of her easel on which rests Sherzo, seen on page 210. On the back wall the unfinished painting is part of her Sea Dream series.

Kathleen Lochen Staiger, one of the most popular and respected teachers at the Vero Beach Museum of Art, landed in our city almost by accident.  Back in 1998, she and her husband, Bill, owned property in Stuart and planned to build a house there. On a business trip to Vero Beach one day, they drove east across the Barber Bridge and spied the Museum of Art.

“We saw this beautiful white building gleaming in the sun,” Kathy recalls. “We both decided to go in and investigate for ourselves.”  After an hour touring the museum and talking to the staff, they turned to each other and said simultaneously, “This is such a great facility, let’s move here.”

For a number of years in South Florida, Kathy had taught oil painting to adults. She loved her work and wanted to continue when she moved to Vero Beach, so she applied to the Museum of Art and was accepted as an art teacher for an adult program. She is currently teaching three courses a semester there, as well as giving two special workshops on color.

Kathy’s students are known to be a fiercely loyal and devoted lot. When the time to enroll in her course arrives, they line up hours in advance at the museum to secure a place. To quote one student: “I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, but never was taught color theory the way Kathy teaches it.  She is simply the best teacher I have ever encountered.”
