A spectacular bougainvillea-covered arch forms the entrance to Marion Kennedy’s garden. Often photographed, the abundant foliage and intense colors of the arch delight visitors. In 2006 it was chosen as the cover for the Garden Conservancy’s national listing of private gardens.
The Garden Conservancy, founded in New York in 1989, showcases and preserves outstanding private gardens across the United States, and offers an Open Days program. This program allows the public to admire gardens that are not frequently open and to see up close the ideas and practices of
America’s most creative horticulturists.
A directory with pictures and directions is produced each year by region as well as nationally; volunteers across the country do research and assist in setting up visits or garden preservation. Florida made its first appearance in the directory in 1998.
In April of this year, the Conservancy offered three local gardens as part of their Open Days program for the Eastern United States. On a spring Saturday, the public was invited to spend from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. visiting a trio of very different gardens in Vero Beach, the only such program offered by the Conservancy in Indian River County this year.
