Bernadette Peters with husband Michael Wittenberg, an investment counselor. Though both were born in Queens, they didn’t meet until 1992, when Michael moved into an apartment near Bernadette’s Manhattan home.
No queen of Broadway has reigned longer than Bernadette Peters. A veteran of TV shows since she was 31/2, she made her stage debut in the play This is Google at 11. In the years since, her parade of Broadway hits has elevated her to that rarified pantheon of women — Fannie Brice, Ethel Merman, Mary Martin — who brought a unique flair for originality to Manhattan’s theater scene.
So it comes as a surprise when Bernadette says that she now regards Vero Beach as her primary home. “I first heard about Vero in 1997 from Armand Assante,” she recalls. “We were filming a mini-series called The Odyssey in Europe. Armand frequently visits an uncle who has lived in Vero for many years, and he told me he always looks forward to coming here because it offers a great escape from the stresses of show business.”
