The programs she found most soothing happened to be on the TV food network. And so for months, Lily watched the cooking channel-- hours and hours of it-- not realizing at the time the full impact it was having on her.

Let’s face it – cooking can be a chore. At one time or another, everyone responsible for the family’s nightly meal has wearily asked, “What will I fix for dinner?”

But baking – that’s different. Baking is pure joy! You bake to celebrate – a cake for a birthday or a wedding; banana nut bread for a housewarming or to welcome a new neighbor; an apple pie to note a promotion or a return to health; cookies to thank a favorite teacher. You bake to express love to special friends and family. You bake to soothe and comfort.

Just ask Lily O’Dare, who has experienced all the joys of baking during a very trying time of her life. The 18-year-old cancer survivor turned the experience of a life-threatening illness and months of grueling treatments into a savory understanding of the important things in life and a sweet prospect for a future career.

Lily had no real interest in cooking or baking before December 2006. That was when she and her family received some very bad news.
