
A winning combination of discipline, dedication and commitment to excellence gives Vero Beach High School’s No. 1 Florida lacrosse team something to smile about.
Although lacrosse hasn’t been and probably will never be a mainstream sport in the Sunshine State, Coach Shannon Dean and his staff opened new doors when the Vero Beach High School varsity girls lacrosse team won their first FHSAA State Championship in 2006.
When Dean became the team’s head coach in 2003 he decided that his players needed a philosophy to achieve victory both on and off the field. He calls this philosophy the Three Pillars of Success.
The first pillar is discipline. For the Fighting Indians, discipline is a balance of work and play. “We work harder than any team in Florida,” Dean explains. “But once those three hours are over we shift gears.”
