There’s something about Mary Morris that is quite disarming. That was evident five minutes into the cocktail party.

As president of the Indian River Literary Society, I spend some time with each author at a small dinner party the night before the presentation and at lunch just prior to their talk. The amount of time I spent with the society’s December author was a pleasant exception.

I first heard Mary speak at the Key West Literary Seminar in January 2006, where the topic was travel. She presented excerpts from her, at the time, unpublished, travel memoir, The River Queen. She was an entertaining speaker, so when her book Revenge was mentioned as a possible presentation before the Literary Society, I relayed my impressions of her to the other members of the author selection committee.
