Where The Seagrass Sways

The gracious elegance of Georgian-style architecture is especially evident in this impressive view of the house as it appears from the beach. On the right side a covered terrace adjoins the first-floor master suite, and the balcony above it is accessed from one of the guest bedrooms. On the opposite side is the summer kitchen outside the family room and above is the partially covered terrace used by guests staying in the second-floor master suite. The living room’s two-story bay is in the center flanked by the dining room and library.

Simply put, 5 Sea Court is the address in John’s Island where oceanfront living is savored at a rarely surpassed level of luxury.  The two-story house rising behind this address is an elegant, West Indies-seasoned Georgian mansion overlooking the Atlantic Ocean; the setting is wondrous. Could life get any better than this? Well, frankly, it probably could, somewhere, but who’d want to look further? Sure, everyone imagines that the seagrass grows greener on the other side of the privacy wall, but this is prime Florida sand dune and the seagrass sprouting here is just about as green as it gets.

Sea Court is a quiet cul-de-sac that runs a short distance along the ocean off the south end of Beach Road. An elliptical driveway shaded by southern magnolias and tall palm trees leads to the front entrance of No. 5 where paneled mahogany doors crowned with an Adam fanlight are safeguarded beneath a wide, overhanging veranda supported by pairs of stately Tuscan Doric columns and restrained with lacy Chippendale railings. It’s all rather casually understated, but quite impressive nonetheless. Those possessed of a discerning eye won’t fail to miss this point made by Scott Blakeslee Disher & Associates who created the architectural plans commissioned by John Reynolds of Island Building Company.
